A client's abdomen before and after lymphatic drainage massage at HQ Aesthetics in Melville, Perth

It Is Not A Massage For Sore Muscles

Your lymphatic system has no pump. Blood has a heart pushing it around, lymph has nothing, so it relies on your movement, your breathing and the squeeze of the muscles around it to keep moving.

When you sit still for a long flight, spend a week not moving much, or run into a hormonal shift, that fluid slows down and settles. You see it as puffiness in the face, heaviness in the legs, or a stomach that feels swollen for no obvious reason.

Manual lymphatic drainage is a very light, rhythmic technique that works with that system rather than on the muscle underneath it. The pressure is deliberately soft, because the vessels involved sit only a few millimetres below the surface of your skin. Press harder and you go straight past them.

If You Have Had It Before And Hated It

The most common complaint is that it felt like nothing was happening. That usually means it was done too fast or too hard. Slow is the whole technique, and an hour is an hour for a reason.

Who Actually Books This

Lymphatic drainage along the jawline and under the ear
  • Before a wedding, a shoot or an event, for a face and body that look settled rather than puffy
  • During a stretch of long flights or long days at a desk, when the legs feel heavy by mid afternoon
  • Alongside body sculpting, where drainage is done first so the session has somewhere to send fluid
  • Through hormonal shifts and cycles where fluid retention is predictable and miserable

What This Treatment Will Not Do

It will not burn fat and it will not treat a medical condition. If you are dealing with diagnosed lymphoedema, that is managed by a certified lymphoedema therapist, and Simone will tell you that rather than take your money.

Questions People Actually Ask

Much lighter than people expect. It is not a deep tissue massage and it should never hurt. The pressure is closer to the weight of a hand resting on you than to someone working a knot out of your shoulder, because the vessels being moved sit just under the skin. Most people find it so relaxing they fall asleep partway through.

Two to three days before is the sweet spot for a wedding, a shoot or a big night. You get the settled, less puffy look without the flushed skin some people have for an hour or two afterwards. If you can only get in the day before, that still works, just book the morning rather than the evening.

It depends entirely on why you are coming. For a one off before an event, a single session does the job. For ongoing puffiness or fluid that keeps returning, a short run of weekly sessions gives you far more than one appointment ever will, and Simone will tell you honestly when you have had enough.

In many cases yes, and swelling in the legs and ankles is one of the more common reasons people book. Positioning is adjusted so you are comfortable and never flat on your back for long. Bring it up when you book, and if you are being cared for by a midwife or an obstetrician, check with them first.

There are a few. Active infection, a current DVT or clotting disorder, untreated congestive heart failure, kidney failure, or an active cancer that has not been discussed with your treating team. Simone will ask about all of this before she starts, and if a treatment is not right for you she will say so rather than take the booking.

Drink more water than usual for the rest of the day and expect to need the bathroom more often, which is the point. Skip alcohol that night if you can, keep the food light, and avoid a hot sauna or a long hot bath for a few hours. A short walk is better than lying down.
